A dog that is well trained is a happy dog! Dog behavior training is essential to the general well being of a dog. Both you and your dog will benefit immensely if he is well trained.
Some of the basic dog behavior training, like teaching your dog to sit when you tell him to, and to come to you when you call him, are fairly simple to do and should not cause any difficulty for you or your dog – they just take a bit of patience.
One particular command that I have always found to be really important is the command ‘down’. As soon as your dog hears you say this, he should immediately lie down on the floor, whatever he was doing when you said it. This command could actually help to save his life. Just think about a situation when he is running around off his leash, and is heading straight for danger, what do you do? To be able to shout ‘down’ and know that he will immediately drop, will at least give you peace of mind, and you know if you ever face this type of situation, your dog will obey you.
As your dog progresses to more complicated commands, you will find that this level of dog training will take a lot more effort on your part, but it will be worth it in the end, and there is lots of help available.
You may find that you want to join others when you are training your dog, and there will be plenty of dog training courses near you. Take a look in the local papers, or on shop windows, and you are sure to find one.
You could find that watching a video at home will be all that you need to help you with your dog training. There are lots of choices, but a particularly good one is this one – it also offers a free sample lesson that you can listen to.
Whichever type of dog behavior training you decide to use, one thing is certain – to be sure that your dog will always obey your commands you need to be able to practice them lots and lots and lots. As with any type of dog training you need a good supply of patience, persistence and dog treats!
